Rhythm & Blues ist ein Begriff, der ursprünglich verwendet wurde, um schnell gespielten Blues von Afroamerikanern zu bezeichnen. Die Musikrichtung R&B hat sich seit den 1940er Jahren stark verändert. Ab den 1980er Jahren nahmen die ersten Interpreten Musik auf, die als moderne Form des R&B bezeichnet werden kann. Vorreiter des Contemporary R&B waren Michael Jackson, Prince und Luther Vandross, die Einflüsse von Pop, Funk und Soul verwendeten.
In den 1990er Jahren wurde Hip-Hop und Rap immer beliebter und es kam zu einer immer stärkeren Vermischung der Genres. Bekannte Musiker wie R. Kelly, Brandy und Aaliyah oder auch Mariah Carey und Boyz II Men sowie TLC dominierten in den 90er Jahren die Billboard-Charts in Amerika.
Ab dem Jahr 2000 wird R&B auch ganz allgemein als „Black Music“ oder „Urban Music“ bezeichnet, denn R&B und Hip-Hop sind zunehmend miteinander verschmolzen. Bekannte Vertreter ab dem Jahr 2000 sind u. a. Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Usher, Bruno Mars und Rihanna.
